If it was purely for an off-road expedition, the Defender.

For absolutely anything other than pure off-road use, the G Class.

Came kinda close to a 2DR 90 Defender out of law school. Ultimately I realized - long road trips in it would be torture, the transmission was difficult to shift, and the clutch felt like the brake. But how great would it be to have one to use once in a while?

I also recall that the Defender was just north of 35 grand, even in the late 90s. The '97 SHO I wound up with was 25K out the door.
